The Valley Blue Sox won Game 1 of The New England Collegiate Baseball League Championship Wednesday night.

The Blue Sox are in familiar territory after winning the 2017 NECBL Championship. The reigning champs are back in the finals after the first championship in team history last season.

They started this year’s series the same way they did last year… with a win.

The Blue Sox won by a final of 5 to 3 against The Ocean State Waves to take Game 1 of the best of 3 series. The Valley Blue Sox are one of the top teams in the NECBL.

They were crowned the 2018 Northern Division Champions Monday after defeating the Sanford Mariners. The Blue Sox have six players from western Massachusetts.

22News spoke with 3rd baseman and Chicopee native Micheal Wroth about what it’s like playing in front of his friends and family.

“During the college season you don’t get to play in front of as many people,” said Wroth. “Especially playing here locally in front of 100 people I know from Chicopee, it’s awesome to see people I know in the crowd.”

Holyoke native Endy Morales got the win for the Sox pitching 7 innings and striking out 7 to add to his undefeated record. The Blue Sox next game will be played on Thursday in Rhode Island.

A win in that game will make them champions, but if they lose both teams will play Game 3 in Holyoke on Friday night.
