Western Mass Pioneers kickoff soccer season early with U.S. Open Cup game

Hundreds were at Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow to watch as the Western Mass Pioneers took on the Elm City Express.

The Pioneers lost 2 to 1. But fans still have a whole season to look forward to.

One of the founders of the team, Tony Salvador, told 22News soccer is a staple in their community.

“The excitement is just soccer, everyone just loves it and its taken off better than we could have expected. The excitement builds the minute we announce it,” said Salvador.

The team is celebrating their 20th season this year.

The first game of the regular season is Wednesday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m.
