WNEU wrestler wins national championship

A local wrestler became a champ this weekend!

John Boyle, a Junior, became the first NCAA Division 3 champion this weekend for Western New England University.

Boyle captured the national title on Saturday with a 4 to 3 victory over Jake Ashcraft of Ithaca College.

He says he’s happy to take home the win for Western New England University.

“It almost still feels unreal to me, it hasn’t really sunk in yet. And I have so many people to thank for it. I’m just so honored to win for this school in particular,” said Boyle.

“He lives a championship lifestyle in everything that he does, which is something that we preach to our guys on an everyday basis,” said WNEU Wrestling Coach Mike Sugermeyer.

This is the university’s first national championship in any sport.
