It’s a St. Patrick’s tradition in western Massachusetts like no other, the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
“This is beautiful, good feelings,” said Angel Torres of Holyoke. “Everybody gets along and gets together and enjoy themselves. It’s a good time.”
The streets of downtown Holyoke were filled with people Sunday for the 68th edition of the parade. You could see the Irish pride not only in the crowds of people who watched the parade on the sidewalks but also in the homes along the parade route.
Many houses were decked out in green and had Irish decorations, and some hosted St. Patrick’s Day parties during the parade. One Holyoke woman told 22News she couldn’t wait to start celebrating with family and friends.
“We are very excited to have family and friends and we love having people,” said Kristen Debian. “It’s such a good occasion to show western Massachusetts is alive and well. Especially for Holyoke.”
And it’s not just western Massachusetts residents who enjoy this parade. One North Carolina man told 22News he makes it a point to come back to western Massachusetts every year around St. Patrick’s Day just for this parade.
“We get all the kids together and it’s just a great time for everybody and its a lot of fun to see all the folks that march,” said Jimmy Stewart. “The firemen the policemen, the kids, the marching bands, it’s just great.”
This year’s Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day Parade actually fell on St. Patrick’s Day and spectators told 22News it was one of the best they’ve ever seen.
