Police have a section of the road closed to traffic while crews work to clear the accident.
Drivers were asked to seek alternate routes while police looked into the cause of the serious crash.
There is currently no word on when traffic will resume back to normal.
Springfield has some of the most dangerous intersections in Massachusetts, according to the State Department of Transportation.
Trains run through many communities here in western Massachusetts, but some residents say certain crossings are marked more clearly than others.
The road work will begin Wednesday and go until Friday, July 27.
Police are advising drivers traveling in the area of West Granville and Route 189 to use caution Tuesday evening.
The road has since reopened.
