April weather can be very changeable in western Massachusetts

Weather News

After some sunshine in the morning the clouds moved in during the afternoon on Friday. Even though it was on the cool side with temperatures in the 40s, that didn’t keep people from going for a spring walk at Forest Park in Springfield. You just needed to bundle up.

Our average high temperatures for this time of year should be in the low to mid 50s with our average low temperatures in the low to mid 30s.

“The weather could be up and down. It’s April so you don’t know what we’re gonna get. We could have a lot of snow or it could be really beautiful nice and warm but so far I think it’s nice I enjoy this weather,” said Martina Ohradka of Feeding Hills.

On average we pick up just over one and a half inches of snow in the Springfield area during the month of April. Last year we had some snow on April 6th.

“I remember the April 1st snowstorm, I don’t know how many years ago, took all the trees down so I’m enjoying the nice weather. I’m done with the snow,” said Stephen Schoolcraft of Springfield.

It was the April Fool’s Day Snowstorm, 22 years ago on April 1st, 1997. It dumped 17 inches of heavy wet snow on western Massachusetts and brought trees and power lines down everywhere.
