Snow is becoming more frequent as we get closer to winter. Are your tires ready?
It doesn’t matter if you have snow tires or not. There is one simple way to tell whether the tires you do have are ready to take on slippery roads, and that’s focusing on how much tread you have.
Guy Habrat, the manager of Town Fair Tire in West Springfield, told 22News there are two ways to check if your tread is good enough for winter. Or any day. The first way to check is by looking at how the tread compares to something called the wear bar — little indicators at the bottom of the tread.
“Every tire has what they call a wear bar,” Habrat said. “And the wear bar is at the bottom of the tread. You know, if the tread it getting kind of close to the wear bar, um, then it’s a pretty good idea to probably think about changing them.”
The second is the penny trick. If you put a penny in between the tread of your tires with Lincoln’s head upside down, you should not be able to see his whole head. If you can, it’s time to replace the tire.
Habrat says, however, the wear bar indicator is the best way to tell whether you can take on some winter snow.
