Brush fires increase during month of April

Weather News

The brush fire risk here in western Massachusetts is exceptionally high today. April is the month that we see the most brush fires in Massachusetts.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for all of western Massachusetts through this evening. There are a number of factors that make for a high risk for brush fires. The dry conditions along with gusty winds and very low relative humidity allow any brush fires that start to spread quickly.

“We just need things to green up they don’t really do that until later on in April or into May it’s kind of waiting for time to progress before the brush fire risk would go away and also getting a bit more in the way of rain.”

The Monson Police Department posted this picture of Upper Hampden Road on their Facebook page where a brush fire extended to a shed.

On days like today, it’s very important to properly dispose of any smoking materials.
