WINDSOR LOCKS, Conn. (WWLP) – The snow wasn’t sticking to hard surfaces early Tuesday morning, but airlines were already cancelling flights at Bradley International Airport in anticipation of heavier snow as the morning goes on.
Airlines started adjusting their schedules in anticipation of the storm Monday night. There are a significant number of cancellations Tuesday. If you have questions about your flight, Bradley is advising you to contact your specific airline before coming to the airport. If your flight is not cancelled now, it could be cancelled later.
The executive director for Bradley International Airport, Kevin Dillon, told 22News the snow affects everyone at the airport.
He says the airport generates around $200,000 in revenue a day. If flights are cancelled, people aren’t at the airport buying concessions or paying to park.
Passengers told 22News that they weren’t prepared to fly in a nor’easter with the official start of spring just a week away. Airlines were prepared, though. Many of them were open and operating Tuesday morning in order to fly people out before the heaviest of the storm started.
One family from Hinsdale’s flight to Minneapolis was the last one out at 8:15 Tuesday morning before the airport cleared.
“It’s very tough because you kind of plan as far as weather goes”, says Lester Trufant. “There’s months you can count on being fairly normal. This is just outrageous.”
Airlines try not to cancel until they have to. They still have to pay the airport to use the runway whether they fly or not. American Airlines and Delta both told 22News they need to plan ahead for storms in their operating budgets.
