Extreme heat affecting beginning of school year in western Mass.

Back-to-school season is here, but that doesn’t mean the summer weather has slowed down.

It’s the first day of school for kids in Ludlow, and they are starting the school year off with a half day because of the heat.

The district said lunch will not be served today because of the half day schedule. 

And Ludlow isn’t the only school district in western Massachusetts dismissing students early today. 

Springfield, Easthampton, and Greenfield students will also have a half days today.

In Springfield, the bus schedule will be adjusted for dismissal times, and breakfast and lunch will be served.

And kids in Holyoke were given a couple extra days of summer vacation.

Public schools were scheduled to start class on Tuesday, but their first day back has been pushed to Thursday. Since most of those campuses are old buildings, they lack A/C.
