How computer models help forecast a storm’s path

Weather News

As we’ve been tracking the path of Hurricane Florence one of the terms you may have heard us talk about is the difference in what computer models are suggesting the storm will do.

A computer model is basically just a calculation about future weather adn these calculations are different depending on the model you use.

The European model (ECMWF) and the American Model (GFS) are often compared, but there are dozens of different models we can look at for both the short and long term.

There can be differences in track and intensity and as meteorologists, it’s our job to look at the models and build a forecast based on the guidance the models provide and that’s what the National Hurricane Center is also doing when making their forecast.
