How to protect your home from termite damage

Weather News

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Termites cause damage that is typically not covered by homeowners’ insurance.

“I would do it professionally, a lot of times these do-it-yourself efforts are going to be a waste of time and money,” that’s what Natasha Wright, an entomologist with Braman Termite and Pest Elimination Specialists, told 22News about taking care of a termite problem.

Termites chew through the wood in your home. They cause more than $5 billion dollars of property damage every year. And getting rid of them isn’t easy. Since they’re most active in the spring, it’s important to keep them out of your house now.

The National Pest Management Association breaks down the steps to take:

  • First, clear clogged gutters because the pests are attracted to moisture.
  • Remove any stumps in your yard, as they are food for termites.
  • Always keep mulch at least 15 inches from your foundation, to prevent easy access to your home.
  • Keep any tree limbs and branches as far from your roof as possible.
  • And firewood should be stacked on a raised platform, at least 20 feet away from your house.

Spring is also the time of year many homeowners put their houses on the market. When it comes to termites, it’s buyer and seller beware.

22News found out some warnings signs of termite damage.

“Some conducive conditions for termites, of course, are wood in contact with the ground, if you see any wood that’s hollow for example, if you’re knocking on it, any sort of damage or leaks need to be taken care of, and of course, getting a termite inspection… before you buy a home,” Wright explained.

A typical home inspection may miss termite damage, so get a “wood-destroying organism” inspection to make sure you’re safe from expensive repairs before you purchase a home.

If you do have a current termite problem, make sure to consult a professional.
