Local snow-related businesses impacted by lack of snowfall in the Pioneer Valley

Weather News

SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) – Business has been tailing off recently in the Pioneer Valley for shops that sell snow blowers, shovels and generators.

Many local residents rejoice at the thought of a mild winter with very little snow. Others like a nice, white wintry landscape to enjoy during the cold weather. But for companies that rely on snow for profit, the recent lull has been bad for business.

But Taplin Yard, Pump and Power Equipment in Agawam told 22News their sales were still good enough in the preseason to get through the mild weather.

“Oh we had a good year because of snow blowers, you know it’s always preseason sales. But we definitely need a snowstorm right now for the repairs and for the sales for people who had their snow blowers break down,” Marty Jagodowski told 22News.

Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Agawam has also noticed a drop in winter-related sales including ice scrapers, ice melt and shovels. And there’s no doubt the dry weather has created issues for some local snow plow companies.

And we aren’t just a little off of the normal snowfall. On a typical year we normally see about 17 inches by now, and right now we are standing at just seven. And keep in mind a normal season sees about 50 inches of snow in Chicopee.

And we almost saw a good snow storm this Sunday, but as the forecast progressed, it continued to stay South, so most of western Massachusetts is snow-free for yet another day.
