From April to May was like flipping a switch and summer-like air is here.
If you’re wondering why it’s already feeling like the middle of summer you can thank the jet stream.
The jet stream is an area of strong winds high in the sky that guides storm systems and helps to separate warmer air to the south from colder air to the north.
Right now the jet stream has dipped in the western US, bringing cooler than average temperatures there. But over the eastern half of the country the jet stream has surged to the north, allowing for warmer air to push into most of the east including here in western Massachusetts.
The colder than average air that we had most of April has been pushed north into Canada. We don’t expect colder than average temperatures anytime soon, but it just won’t be AS warm this weekend.
