Recent floodings may not be covered in your home insurance

Weather News

The heavy rain and melting snow Thursday led to quite a bit of flooding across western Massachusetts.

If the water from Thursday’s storm got into your basement, you may be out of luck.

Many areas picked up between one and a half and three inches of rain, that along with the melting snow led to some pretty big puddles. Plus, if the water from those puddles got into your home, unless you have flood insurance, your policy will not likely cover the damage.

Bill Trudeau, President of Insurance Center of New England, told 22News, “But surface water, the water we see pooling up in yards that is making its way into basements, that’s just not covered in the traditional homeowner’s policy.”

Bill Trudeau says if you get flood insurance that will cover damage to things like the heating or electrical system in your basement.

He says your homeowner’s policy will cover water damage from a broken pipe or a leaking roof.
