Now that we’re in 2019 we can look back at 2018 and what a year it was for weather here in western Massachusetts. Last year was easily the wettest year at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee.
The previous wettest year was 2008 when 65.78″ of rain fell, but we had more than 70″ in 2018.
It wasn’t just a wet year in Chicopee, it was wet all over western Massachusetts. In Amherst 2018 was the second wettest year ever with 63.62 inches of rain, almost breaking the previous record wettest year all the way back in 1888 when it rained 64.44 inches that year.
Interestingly the second half of 2018 was the wettest second half of the year ever in Amherst, so the majority of our bonus rainfall for the year came during an incredibly wet second half of 2018.
We’ll see what 2019 will bring.
