Summer is a few days away, but summer-like weather is here early.
The 22News Storm Team has declared a Weather Alert for today due to dangerous heat and the risk for some strong or severe storms later in the day.
HEAT & HUMIDITY:
A Heat Advisory is in effect for eastern Hampden, eastern Hampshire & eastern Franklin Counties from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. Monday. The heat index or “feels like” temperature will approach 100º this afternoon.
An Air Quality Alert is in effect for Hampden, eastern Hampshire and eastern Franklin Counties from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday. High ozone levels could make breathing difficult for those suffering from asthma or others sensitive to air quality.
The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sunshine, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Take extra precautions, if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 9-1-1.
If you typically have breathing difficulties, the higher ground ozone levels may make breathing even more difficult today.
STRONG STORM POTENTIAL:
After 2 p.m. and through this evening we’re watching the potential for a few strong or severe storms.
The main threat with these storms is for lightning, heavy rain and damaging winds. If you hear thunder, head indoors.
The potential for a few storms and downpours continues through midnight tonight.
Stay with the 22News Storm Team as we track today’s heat and storm chances.
