You may be hoping for springlike weather but we can still get some pretty big winter storms this time of year.
It was the first day of March, the sun was shining and temperatures made it into the 30s. While you may be looking forward to spring we can still get quite a bit of snow this time of year.
“I want spring but if more snow comes then all we can do is persevere really,” said Adren Larriu of West Springfield.
“This is a month we do get accumulating snow. It typically happens during the first half of the month not as much as the second half of the month the sun gets stronger our days get longer,” said 22News Storm Team Meteorologist Nick Bannin.
On average we usually get around 8.9 inches of snow in the Springfield area during the month of March.
We have had some pretty big winter storms in the past during the month of March. The most snow recorded during a snowstorm at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee happened just two years ago on March 14th, 2017. 21.7″ inches of snow fell.
Last March we had back to back winter storms during the first couple weeks of March and the snow really piled up.
NOAA just released a revised outlook for this month and it’s now calling for cooler and wetter than average conditions for us here in New England.
While March 1st is considered the meteorological start of spring, spring officially arrives on Wednesday, March 20th.
