We had another tornado touchdown this week, a brief EF-0 tornado with winds over 60 mph touched down on the cape on Monday morning.
It’s been a busy year for tornadoes here in Massachusetts and throughout New England with high numbers of confirmed tornadoes reported in Connecticut and Rhode Island as well.
How does 2018 rank compared to other years?
In 1958 we had the most tornadoes in Massachusetts in recorded history when 12 tornadoes touched down that yet.
Records go back to 1950. We had 10 tornadoes in both 1956 and 1972 with 8 tornadoes in 1963, 1970 and 1997.
What about this year?
We’ve had 7 tornadoes so far this year, equal to the 7 tornadoes we had in 1957 and 1989. This year isn’t at the top of the list for tornado touchdowns in the state, it’s still significant.
In an average year we get 2 or 3 tornadoes in Massachusetts, so this year we have had more than double the average and we’re not done with 2018 yet.
