Tornado warnings expire for part of Cape, Block Island

(WPRI) — The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Warning for Block Island Monday morning, but as of 8:40 a.m., the tornado warning had expired, and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued.

During the brief tornado warning, weather service officials advised those in the path of the storm to take cover or to get to the lowest level of a strong building, away from windows.

A tornado warning was also issued until 10:45 a.m. for parts of Cape Cod including East Falmouth, Forestdale, and East Sandwhich.

A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Block Island at 8:17 a.m., moving northeast at 35 miles per hour, the NWS said in an alert. Debris is likely to become airborne and tree and roof damage is likely.
