Tornado warnings, thunder, lightning, heavy rain moved through local areas Monday

BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) - Tornado Warnings were issued across Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin Counties Monday night, as heavy rain and high winds moved across parts of the Pioneer Valley.

Rain poured down in Belchertown, and the wind shook trees and signs. More than a thousand Eversource customers lost power, including 600 customers in Greenfield, and more than 300 in Hadley.

The National Weather Service sent out multiple mobile device weather alerts. One Belchertown resident told 22News she wouldn't leave her house until the weather passed.

“I work in Greenfield so, from there to South Deerfield I was getting them back to back the entire way,” said Sharae Jones. “Driving it was hailing, thunder. I was going to go to the gym, but I did not want to get on the highway at all, because a lot of people, they still speed, and disregard everything.”

Belchertown residents were warned to seek shelter during one of the National Weather Service Tornado warnings.

The storm brought down trees and took out power in parts of the pioneer valley, but so far no injuries have been reported following the storm.

The rain fell so fast, and so heavily on Route 5 in West Springfield. It flooded an underpass on Riverdale Street around 8:30 p.m. Drivers had to use caution, as more than six inches of water accumulated.

One car pulled off to the side of the road, stuck because the water was too deep. The driver had to call for help.

Once the National Weather Service issued Monday night's first Tornado Warning at 5:34 p.m., the 22News Storm Team jumped into action, providing live updates on the track of the storms, hail, lightning strikes, and power outages.

Nick Bannin even came in to help track the storms.

Ashley Afonso tracked outages on the MEMA website
