Western Massachusetts dealing with dangerous wind chills Monday into Tuesday

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Monday's wind combined with single-digit temperatures made it feel as cold as negative 30-degrees.

Strong winds combined with already frigid temperatures, created dangerous wind chills in western Massachusetts.

Most of western Massachusetts was in a wind chill advisory or wind chill warning Monday, meaning temperatures ranged from potentially hazardous, to life-threatening.

Springfield resident Ashley Griffon said it didn't take long to start feeling the impact of the frigid temperatures.

"Three-point two seconds," Griffon said. "Legit you get outside and you legit know that you're gonna die. It's so cold that I put on leggings, and I had to stop at CVS and get another pair of leggings because my legs were super numb."

In temperatures like these, frostbite can set in in as little as thirty minutes. The West Springfield Fire Department told 22News they do see an increase in medical calls when the temperature drops this low.

Wearing the right clothing is key.

"About five or ten minutes, and then you really start to feel it, your gloves really aren't working anymore," said Clarence Dickey of Springfield. "You have to move around so that your layers are still working for you. Other than that, welcome to New England Right?"

To stay safe outdoors, don't leave any skin exposed. severe frostbite can permanently damage your skin, and in extreme cases, lead to amputation.

It's important to take breaks if you're shoveling or snow blowing. Dress in layers to keep your body temperature from dropping too low.
